Pine wood windows

Pine windows by Slovechno are made from three-ply glued laminated timber with radially cut lamellae. The wood is thoroughly impregnated with Tikkurila antiseptic, the window surface is primed and then Remmers lacquer coating is applied. Both double- and triple-glazed energy-saving IGUs are available, depending on the function of the window unit.
Modern pine windows are gradually regaining the popularity they lost after the emergence of plastic constructions. People choose pine for its absolute environmental friendliness and relatively low cost. Plus, they are no longer the unattractive windows of the past; their construction has undergone a major transformation.
Advantages of pine windows
- Accessibility and affordability of the material. According to statistics, approximately one sixth of Russia’s forests are pine forests, so there is no shortage of raw material;
- Pine has a smooth texture and light colouring. This feature opens up a wide range of possibilities for different types of wood staining and tinting. After all, light-coloured solid wood is easy to repaint in a dark or neutral colour;
- Wood windows made of solid pine have a fairly low density. According to the laws of physics, the lower is the material density, the lower is its thermal conductivity. Simply put, these windows are warmer. For example, expensive oak has a density of 800 kg/m³, while pine has a density of only 520 kg/m³. Many people don’t know it, but pine windows are much warmer than oak windows;
- The material’s low density is not just about warmth. Statistically, the most popular windows for country houses are made of pine, and the cost in this case often plays a secondary role. Country houses are light structures, and pine windows have almost the lowest weight and are perfect for country houses.

Profile systems used
High-quality solid pine and glued laminated timber windows are available in two standard profiles. Number in this case refers to the thickness of pine profile in millimetres:
- Profile No. 78 This profile is considered a heat-insulated option. If the load-bearing wall allows it, the profile can be safely installed in houses all over our great country. Insulating glass units up to a thickness of 42 mm can be used for this application;
- Profile No. 90 It is mounted in non-standard, large window openings. And where owners wish to install quadruple-glazed insulated glass units.

PREMIUM series
- Profile: Three-ply glued laminated timber, 78 mm thick
- Insulating glass unit:
Double glazing, 32-40 mm - Thermal efficiency R(m2+C/W):
0.75 to 1 - Sound absorption: 32 dB
- Wood moisture:
10 % (±2 %)
- Aluminium drip cap and gutter profile as standard.

ELITE series
Profile: Three-ply glued laminated timber, 90 mm thick
Insulating glass unit:
Double glazing, 48 mm- Thermal efficiency R(m2+C/W):
1 to 1.25 Sound absorption: 33 dB
Wood moisture:
10 % (±2 %)
- Aluminium drip cap and gutter profile as standard.
Important issues when choosing pine windows
Modern solid pine windows differ fundamentally in their parameters and construction from Soviet window units. These installations have a much higher performance rating, so you have to pay attention to each sector when selecting one.
Window profile as the basis of construction
The first thing that catches the eye is the appearance of wood. The frame must be flat and smooth, without even the slightest roughness, chips or cracks. Particular attention should be paid to the presence of knots. While a couple of knots on the window stool will not make a big difference, knots on the frame itself are considered a severe and pronounced defect. Especially if they are dark or loose.
Two types of timber are now used for windows – solid block and glued laminated timber. Buying single solid block is always a risk. Not only it is more expensive, but also unscrupulous manufacturers may make windows that will fall into disrepair after a year. As a matter of fact, reputable manufacturers only use dry wood, as they should. These profiles are thoroughly impregnated with several reinforcing and protective coatings before they are assembled, which is why they are more expensive. The windows from an artisan workshop are usually made of wood available, which is often fresh-cut. A good milling machine fnishes the surface almost perfectly, after which the frames are hastily impregnated with a protective compound, lacquered, and sold.
As a result, the window unit dries already in the window opening, i.e. after installation. These are the kinds of windows that people complain about in negative reviews. It could be anything. Frames crack during the shrinkage process, even up to through cracks. They deform and stop closing. Hardware breaks and a lot of other undesirable things happen. Pine frames made of glued laminated timber are completely different. Such timber itself is formed and glued from well-dried planks, using professional equipment. Making glued laminated timber, roughly speaking, in a garage is almost impossible.
Insulating glass unit
Glazing takes up about 70% of the area and weight of the entire structure. The insulating glass unit itself has simple design. It consists of two or more glass panes joined together to form a single unit by means of perimeter profiles. In the budget choice option the insulating glass unit has single chamber, i.e. a profile is installed between the two glass panes, resulting in a hermetically sealed glass box. But there can be several such chambers, and the more there are, the lower is the thermal conductivity and therefore the warmer is the window.
In the case of pine frames, increasing the number of chambers is not always justified. The fact is that pine has low density, and the more chambers there are, the heavier is the IGU. If too many chambers are made, the IGU can push the frame down by its own weight and sink. A maximum of 2 chambers is considered optimal, 3 chambers is a risk. Improving the heat insulation properties of a window can be achieved not only by enlarging the number of chambers in the IGU. In the standard, budget choice option design, the sealed glass chamber is filled with air. In windows with improved thermal insulation, the chambers are filled with inert gas instead of air. These are usually argon or krypton. These gases have a high density and are considered completely non-hazardous.
Another way to increase the windows thermal insulation is to use so-called energy-saving glass. It is an advanced development of modern scientists. Such glass is coated with silver ions. They are not noticeable on the outside, but this silver coating reflects heat rays back into the room. The energy efficiency of ion deposition coating is around 90%.
High-quality hardware
One of the biggest mistakes when choosing a wood window is to economise on window hardware. When it comes to hinges, handles, and all sorts of latches, we always recommend steel. One of the weakest points of wooden windows is their rubber gaskets, they are the ones that wear out most often. As a result, the window’s airtightness decreases considerably. There are many different manufacturers on the market today, but the quality of most gaskets leaves much to be desired. We use Schlegel (Germany) gaskets with multiple gasket circuits, which ensures a lifespan of over 15 years.

Quality German gasket
We use a Schlegel gasket with 2 – 3 gasket circuits. Standard colours: brown, white, beige, light oak.

Aluminium profile covers
Aluminium overlaps on the outer surfaces of the window profiles are possible – for additional protection of wood from the weather.

Decorative covers for insulating glass units
On request we install decorative covers on IGUs to enhance the aesthetic appeal of our products.
